The 120-Year Silence
In 1906, Charles Sherrington gave a name to the signals that tell you what is happening inside your own body. He called them interoceptive.
The noun we use now — interoception — would take another forty years to settle, and the field itself would take a century. Sight, hearing, touch, balance: all studied exhaustively. The sense of the interior stayed a footnote.
That has changed, and quickly. The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was shared for the discovery of the receptors for temperature and touch — among them the proteins that convert physical pressure into a signal the nervous system can read. Researchers are now mapping the vagus nerve strand by strand and finding it is not one channel but dozens.
1906: the year the interior sense was named. It took until this decade for anyone to build a field around it.
Something is happening outside the labs, too. After a decade of rings, straps, scores and readiness percentages, the mood has turned. The forecasters have a phrase for it — somatic intelligence — and the reports read almost identically: attunement over articulation, felt sense over dashboard. The body is being treated, again, as a source of information rather than a device to be monitored.
The Two-Step Release: Thoracic Spine
Your calves were the last letter. This one is higher up, and most people feel it faster.
The thoracic spine is where sitting quietly accumulates — and it is the architecture your breath depends on. When the mid-back rounds and stiffens, the ribs lose their swing and the diaphragm loses its range. Before it is a posture problem, it is a breathing problem.
Step 1 — Drape & Breathe: Roller across the spine at the base of the shoulder blades. Knees bent, hips down, skull resting in your palms. Exhale, let the ribs drape. 30–60 seconds, breathing into the back of the ribcage.
Step 2 — Extend on the Exhale: Head travels back a few inches — not to the floor. Return on the inhale. 3–5 slow reps, then move the roller up one inch and repeat. Three or four stops.
Keep your hips down and stay above the bottom of your ribcage. Everything you gain in the thoracic spine you can lose by sliding two inches too low.
Total time: about two minutes. Then stand up and take one breath before you do anything else.

The Bandwidth Paradox
By a long-standing estimate, the body sends the brain something on the order of eleven million bits of sensory information every second. Conscious awareness handles a few dozen. More recent work revises both figures — the input far higher, the conscious channel narrower still. The digits move. The ratio doesn’t.
Side by side: roughly 11 million bits in per second against the ten or so you notice — a gap on the order of a million times over (Zimmermann, 1986; Zheng & Meister, Neuron, 2025).
Almost everything your body knows about itself, it knows without telling you.
Takeaway: a sensor doesn’t widen that channel — it competes for it. A number on a screen is data about your body, arriving through your eyes. Both are useful. Only one of them is a skill.
The 30-Second Count
Last week it was pandiculation — the cat’s full-body contraction and slow release. This week the dial is finer, and quieter.
Try this now: Sit still. Don’t take your pulse — no wrist, no neck. For thirty seconds, count only the heartbeats you can actually feel.
Most people count very few. Some count none. This is not a test, and nobody passes it — researchers still debate what the number even measures.
It is here because of what usually happens next: within a few sessions, the count changes. Not because your heart changed — because attention found a channel it had not been using. Do it once this week, then again after two minutes on the roller, and notice which version of yourself is easier to hear.
The Readable Surface
Too soft and there is no signal — the surface yields before your tissue does, and there is nothing to read. Too hard and there is only signal: pain floods the channel and the fine information underneath it is lost.
The cork we use sits between 200 and 300 kg/m³ — firm enough to be legible, forgiving enough to be listened to. It also carries a thermal conductivity around 0.04 W/m·K, roughly a five-thousandth that of aluminum, which is why it never pulls heat from your skin the way metal or stone does. It arrives at your temperature.
A surface you can forget about is a surface you can feel through. That is the entire design brief.
